Standards and Level Descriptors

 

 

5/6-IM-1 The learner will demonstrate the proper care, maintenance and workings of his instrument.

 

Beginning – The student identifies basic parts of their instrument

Progressing – The student identifies all parts of their instrument

Proficient – The student identifies all parts of their instrument and proper maintenance of their instrument

Advanced  The student identifies all parts of their instrument, proper maintenance and the principles of how the instrument works. 

 

5/6-IM-2 The learner will produce tones characteristic of their instrument.

5/6-IM-2a The student will play assigned scales from memory.

 

Beginning – The student can play the scale, but tempo is very slow, some notes are incorrect, rhythm is not accurate, articulation is not apparent.

Progressing – The scale can be played with correct notes, but the tempo is slow and the rhythm is inaccurate, some articulation is being used.

Proficient – The scale is played with correct notes, rhythm is accurate, tempo is still slow, and articulation is apparent.

Advanced – The scale is played at a fast tempo, rhythm is accurate, notes are correct, and articulation is even

 

5/6-IM-2b The student plays sustained tones on pitch.

 

Beginning -  A basic pitch is played; however it varies and lacks quality.

Progressing – The pitch does not vary, but lacks quality.

Proficient – The pitch is accurate, has quality, but lacks duration.

Advanced – The pitch is accurate, has quality and duration.

 

5/6-IM-3 The student will identify and write music notation.

 

Beginning – The basics are identifiable (e.g., staff names, identify whole, half, quarter note, rhythmic counting, etc.)

Progressing – Notation and counting through 8th notes and fundamental terms are recognized and performed.

Proficient – Notation and counting through 16th notes and terminology are recognized and played.

Advanced – The student can perform and identify a piece that uses terminology and notation.

 

5/6-IM-4 The student will listen to/perform music of various styles.
