1.1 Students will read and write using a variety of word recognition strategies at grade one level.

Kindergarten:
K-R/W-1.1a  Use a variety of phonetic skills enabling them to read simple text.
K-R/W-1.1b   Read and write their first and last name, color words number words, and 25 high frequency words.
K-R/W-1.1c  Read words using the CVC pattern.
K-R/W-1.1d  Read and write 55 Orton phonograms.

1st grade:
1-R/W-1.1a Read and write 71 phonograms
1-R/W-1.1b Read and spell phonetically regular and previously taught words.
1-R/W-1.1c Read words with common contractions.
1-R/W-1.1d Read compound words.                                                                               
1-R/W-1.1e Read words with inflectional endings  -ing, -s, and -ed.                                        
1-R/W-1.1f Read 200 high frequency words.

1.1.2 Students will demonstrate phonological awareness and exhibit knowledge of letters and sounds.

Kindergarten:

K-R/W-1.2a   Recognize rhyming words and patterns of rhyme.
K-R/W-1.2b   Say the alphabet in order
K-R/W-1.2c   Identify capital and lowercase letters.
K-R/W-1.2d   Match capital and lowercase letters.
K-R/W-1.2e  Identify initial consonant sounds.
K-R/W-1.2f   Discriminate among initial sounds that are the same and different.
K-R/W-1.2g   Identify the number of syllables in one and two syllable words.

1st grade:
1-R/W-1.2   Recognize the sound/letter correspondence of the consonant sounds in initial, medial, and final position.

1.1.3 Students will demonstrate knowledge of the organization of print when reading and writing.

Kindergarten:
K-R/W-1.3a   Use left to right and top to bottom progression in completing activities in reading.
K-R/W-1.3b  Identify spatial relationships: top/bottom, first/last, middle/last

1st grade:
1-R/W-1.3a   Identify what an author does and what an illustrator does.
1-R/W-1.3b   Identify the title page and table of contents of a book.
1-R/W-1.3c  Alphabetize words to the first letter.

 

1.1.4 Students will read and demonstrate comprehension at grade one level, using a variety of strategies.

Kindergarten:

K-R/W-1.4b   Use a variety of comprehension skills to make predictions.
K-R/W-1.4c   Identify the cause of a given event.
K-R/W-1.4d   Identify the main idea of a selection or passage.
K-R/W-1.4e   Put parts of a story in sequence.
 
1st grade:

1-R/W-1.4a   Recall details about a given selection.
1-R/W-1.4b  Identify a sequence of events in a given selection.
1-R/W-1.4c   Use a variety of comprehension skills to make a prediction.
1-R/W-1.4d   Derive meaning from periods, questions marks, exclamation points, and quotation marks in a selection.
1-R/W-1.4e   Identify the explicitly-stated main idea at the beginning of a paragraph.
1-R/W-1.4f   Identify the cause of a given event.
1-R/W-1.4g   Recognize multiple word meanings.

1.1.5 Students will respond to fiction and non-fiction text through writing, drawing, and verbal responses.

Kindergarten:

K-R/W-1.5a   Identify the characters, setting, and events in a story.
K-R/W-1.5b   Distinguish between fantasy and reality in stories.
K-R/W-1.5c   Listen to a variety of stories, with emphasis on fairy tales.
K-R/W-1.5d   Retell and dramatize a variety of stories, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and poems.

1st grade:

1-R/W-1.5a   Identify character, setting, problem, and events leading to a resolution in a story.
1-R/W-1.5b   Retell a story in proper chronological sequence.
1-R/W-1.5c   Identify characteristics of fairytales.
1-R/W-1.5d  Distinguish between fiction and nonfiction literature.

1.1.6 Students will print neatly and correctly.

Kindergarten:
K-R/W-1.6a   Print his/her first and last name.
K-R/W-1.6b   Form manuscript capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet on lined paper using the program adopted by the district.
K-R/W-1.6c   Print words and single sentences using the correctspacing.

1st grade:
1-R/W-1.6a   Write capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet in manuscript using the program adopted by the district.
1-R/W-1.6b   Space words in a sentence correctly.

 1.1.7 Students will write about familiar experiences, people, objects, or events.

Kindergarten:
K-R/W-1.7   Write a simple sentence and/or story.

1st grade:
1-R/W-1.7a Write sentences using nouns, verbs, and adjectives correctly.
1-R/W-1.7b   Use capital letters at the beginning of sentences, proper names, days, holidays, months, and the pronoun I.
1-R/W-1.7c   Use periods and question marks correctly at the end of sentences.
1-R/W-1.7d Write three or four sentences about a specific topic.
1-R/W-1.7e   Proofread in order to correct errors of skills mastered.

Speaking

1.2.1 Students will speak in clear, complete, coherent sentences using standard English.

Kindergarten:
K-S-2.1a   Display the ability to speak incomplete sentences in a pleasant voice with good control as to volume and tone.
K-S-2.1b   Increase their vocabulary and use words correctly when speaking.

1st grade:
1-S-2.1a  Use oral language or vocabulary which is developmentally appropriate.
1-S-2.1b
  Contribute to class discussions on specific topics.
1-S-2.1c   Listen and respond to stories from a variety of cultures and peoples.

Listening

1.3.1 Students will identify information gained and complete tasks through listening.

Kindergarten:
K-L-3.1a   Follow rules for effective listening.
K-L-3.1b   Follow simple two-step directions.
K-L-3.1c  Listen to a variety of stories, with emphasis on fairy tales.

1st grade:
1-L-3.1a  Listen to a variety of literature representing a variety of cultures.
1-L-3.1b   Follow simple three-step oral directions.
1-L-3.1c   Listen to teachers and other classmates and make proper responses.
