Social Studies Standards and Curriculum (K-1)

 

1.1 Students will demonstrate an understanding that history relates to events and people of other times and places.
K-SS-1.1 Tell how and why national holidays are celebrated and how they honor famous individuals important to American history.
1-SS-1.1a Name two national holidays and give one reason why each is important.
1-SS-1.1b Identify and describe famous individuals important to American history.
1-SS-1.1c Describe how people, places, and things change over time.

1.2 Students will compare and contrast families and schools of the past and present.
K-SS-1.2 Compare and contrast family groups/structures.
1-SS-1.2 Identify ways that people grow and change over time.

1.3 Students will compare the relative location of people, places, and things.
K-SS-1.3a Identify the globe as a model of the planet earth and that the blue on the globe indicates water and the colored parts represent land.
K-SS-1.3b Locate and identify the shape of the United States, Nebraska, and David City or Bellwood on a map.
1-SS-1.3a Identify map symbols such as the legend references to land, water, roads, and cities.
1-SS-1.3b Label a simple map incorporating directions and map symbols.

1.4 Students will recognize that climate, location, and physical surroundings affect the lives of people.
K-SS-1.4a Name community symbols such as traffic signs, traffic lights, and street and highway markers.
K-SS-1.4b Identify appropriate clothing and the type of weather associated with each season.
